Diabetes Management

Xiao-Ke: The Wasting & Thirsting Disease

Practitioners of Oriental Medicine have known about diabetes for over 2000 years. Ancient Chinese texts identified it as "Xiao-Ke," or the wasting and thirsting disease. This disease is characterized by excessive thirst, hunger and urination common, which are classic symptoms of Type 2 diabetes.

From an Oriental Medicine perspective, the main cause of Type 2 diabetes is deficiency of Qi. Consuming too many fat, greasy, sweet foods impairs the transformative and transportive functions of the Stomach and Spleen. As a result, excess heat is retained in these organs, leading to increased appetite and constant hunger. Excess internal heat also consumes bodily fluids. When the bodily fluids are consumed, they are unable to nourish the Lungs and Kidneys.

For the treatment of diabetes, acupuncture and herbal medicine are administered together in order to expel excess heat from the body and nourish the internal organs.

The Kidneys are the "Root of Life"

Practitioners of Oriental Medicine regard the Kidneys as the "Root of Life." They contain the body's most important reservoir of essential energy: our prenatal essence known as Qi. The kidney meridian includes the adrenal glands and reproductive organs, controlling the reproductive and sexual functions of the body. It filters wastes, controls the balance of body fluids, regulates pH, and controls the development and growth of bones and marrow.

The kidneys provide the prime source of sexual energy, which is regarded as a major indication of internal kidney vitality. In fact, it is not uncommon for men with diabetes to experience ED. Externally, kidney vitality is reflected in the condition of the head, hair, and ears. Tinnitus (ringing ears), a common complication of diabetes, is a sign of kidney dysfunction.

Acupuncture is a Complementary Therapy

Acupuncture treatment is recommended as part of a long-term, comprehensive approach to treating diabetes. While there is no magic cure for diabetes, acupuncture has been clinically proven to reduce blood sugar and can reduce symptoms over time. Most diabetics receiving regular acupuncture treatments experience a decline in cholesterol levels, reduced appetite, increased blood circulation, reduced thirst, and faster healing (for skin wounds such as ulcers).

During a typical treatment, needles are inserted to stimulate specific points to nourish and strength internal organs, stimulate the flow of Qi and blood in the body, repel excess Heat, reduce blood sugar, and relieve pain. In fact, acupuncturists have identified close to 20 points on the body which are associated with regulating blood sugar levels. This holistic therapy also stimulates your body's inherent ability to heal itself, which is why many diabetics undergoing acupuncture treatment generally experience fewer medical complications than those who are not.
Benefits of Acupuncture

  • Lowers blood sugar
  • Reduces appetite
  • Improves circulation
  • Controls excessive thirst
  • Faster healing of wounds
  • Aids weight loss
  • Lowers cholesterol levels

Herbal Medicine

Herbal medicine is an integral part of the treatment of diabetes. While herbal medicine is not intended to replace your existing drug regimen, many patients are able to reduce the frequency and dosage of insulin injections and other traditional drug therapies after taking Chinese herbs. Herbal formulas are also created to prevent interaction with existing medication. Most patients respond to herbal medicine within six to eight weeks.
Electro-Stimulation for Chronic Pain

Electro-stimulation (also known as electro-acupuncture) is an effective technique for freeing up blockages of Qi, especially in patients with chronic pain or illness. As with traditional acupuncture, needles are inserted at specific points along the body. The needles are then attached to a device that deliver electric pulses. The frequency and intensity of the impulse will be adjusted, depending on the symptoms being treated.

This treatment is recommended for conditions where ther is an accumulation of Qi or where Qi is difficult to stimulate, such as:

  • chronic pain
  • diabetes
  • arthritis
  • muscle spasms
Food Therapy

Oriental Medicine has a uniquely different perspective than Western Medicine when it comes to food. Practitioners of Oriental Medicine view food as medicine, examining food's energetic and therapeutic characteristics instead of their caloric count. Nutritional counseling is part of a comprehensive approach to treating diabetes. Eating the right foods can help stabilize blood sugar, reduce symptoms, and lose weight.
