Detoxification

Our bodies have a remarkable ability to heal themselves. However, over time, toxins and wastes build up in the cells and tissues of our bodies. Smoking, drinking, and eating fatty, unhealthy foods contribute to the toxic buildup. Our bodies are exposed to toxins in the environment as well, such as pollution, cleaning solutions, and pesticides in our foods. When the body is unable to filter out these harmful substances, we eventually begin to experience negative side effects such as:

  • acid reflux
  • abdominal bloating
  • allergies
  • constipation
  • depression
  • diarrhea
  • excessive gas
  • fatigue
  • headaches
  • heartburn
  • irritable nowel
  • peptic ulcer
  • persistent cough
  • recurring infections
  • skin problems
  • weight gain
Benefits of Detox

Doing a detox purges toxins and wastes from your body, and regulates bowel movements. As organs are cleansed, they begin functioning properly, resulting in improved digestion, increased metabolism, and an overall feeling of health and well-being. Most people also experience clearer skin, brighter complexion, and relief from skin eruptions. Others also experience relief from symptoms and illness, such as allergies, after doing a detox. A detox program can also help jump-start weight loss.

Acupuncture & Herbal Medicine for Detox

When administered together, acupuncture and herbal medicine are very effective for detoxifying the body. They eliminate harmful toxins and wastes which accumulate in the body over time, encourage improved function of the internal organs (including the stomach, liver, and kidneys), and support overall health by harmonizing and tonifying Qi in the body. Acupuncture also stimulates the production of endorphins. Endorphins relax the body and calm the mind, making it easier to deal with stress and anxiety which often trigger overeating or binge drinking.

Herbal detox formulas are also effective for treating:

  • alcoholism
  • medicinal poisoning
  • drug addiction
  • food poisoning
  • poisoning by agricultural chemicals
  • chronic constipation
  • acute or chronic gastrocentric disorders
  • women's health issues (such as irregular menses)
  • regulating metabolism
How to do a Detox

Start your detox on a weekend, as you many experience temporary changes in bowel movements, urination patterns, sleep or emotional states as your body rebalances.

You do not need to fast during a detox. Eat a healthy, nutritious diet and avoid foods that are hard to digest, such as processed foods, meats (especially pork), dairy, alcohol and caffeine. Eat mostly fresh, organic fruits and vegetables.

Avoid exposure to environmental toxins. Switch to "greener" cleaning products in your home.

An herbal detox formula should be consumed daily during a detox. Herbal detox formulas are effective and generally mild. However, it is common to experience some mild diarrhea and/or flatulence in the first few days as your body purges wastes and adjusts to the herbs. You do not need to take a fiber supplement with herbal medicine.

Receive acupuncture at least once a week. Acupuncture is very effective for promoting detox and relaxation. It can curb appetite, relieve headaches, promote digestion, and relieve stress and tension.

Do some gentle exercises, such as yoga to promote detox (through perspiration). Meditation can also reduce stress and anxiety.

A detox program lasting 3-4 weeks is usually recommended for most individuals. Sometimes, a short detox (with fasting) may be prescribed during illness.
